- A similar spelling occurs in Esna VI, 507, where it designates the primeval serpent Neith. It is unclear precisely how the ram functions in these spellings. Possibly it just serves as a determinative, since the phonetic elements of Kneph/Kmeph are adequately supplied by the other signs (i.e. qmȝ=f < km-ȝ(.t)=f).↩︎The following epithets are paralleled in a nearby hymn to Khnum from column 18: Esna 392, 20-21.↩︎
- The reading of the second sign is uncertain. LGG III, 196c proposed reading: “Der jedes überschwemmte Land zerteilt (fdq šȝ nb)”, but the parallel from Esna 392, 21 indicates nb belongs to the following epithet. Moreover, it seems unlikely the multiple aggressive and violent epithets would be followed by a reference to Khnum apportioning lands. Rather, the verb fdq often refers to mauling enemies, or tearing up plants and roots from their farms: PWL, p. 391.↩︎

- A difficult passage. Sauneron 1962, p. 211, n. h, tentatively read: sʿnḏ swḏȝ ḫy, “celuie qui préserve et entretient en bon état l’enfant”; while Leitz, Löffler 2019, pp. 24-25, with n. 104, offered: swḏȝ nḫn (?), “der das Kind im Mutterleib wohlbehalten sein läßt.” Both interpretations make sense, but neither accounts for all the hieroglyphs. The proposal here understands: s (< sḥn) + ʿnḫ (< ʿnḫ.t, “living eye”: Wb. I, 205, 5; and here in the subsequent verse) + n + ḫ (< ḫy, “child”), then ḏȝw > ṯȝw, “child.” The homophones ṯȝw, “wind”, and ṯȝw, “child”, are spelled in many interesting ways in the present hymn.
Khnum’s role keeping the fetus alive (sʿnḫ) throughout the full term of pregnancy occurs in many texts, including later on in this hymn: cols. 5 (ṯȝw), 6 (qmȝ.n=k), 7 (nḫn).↩︎
- Another challenging passage. The two uraei are apparently inspired by the snakes in the preceding spelling for “path of darkness.” Here the boat most likely writes ṯȝw < ḏȝỉ, “to sail”, just as in the preceding writing of ṯȝw, “chick”:

Rather, the existing signs are appropriate for ḫʿỉ, “to appear; shine”, and that word is spelled elsewhere with two children: Wb. III, 239, 4. The present reading assumes a geminating form (ḫ+ʿ+ʿ), but the first child could also write ms, thus resulting in the related term msḫʿ, “radiant birth; appearance.”↩︎

The ram wearing a uraeus appears elsewhere in spellings of wbn, with the uniliteral values w < wȝḏ, “cobra”, b < bȝ, “ram”: Klotz 2014a, p. 34, n. b. Here the two eyes would appear to write n < nw, “to see” (see the spelling of wbn above in col. 12). Then the final ram with a flail would be a variant of the expected nṯr-sign as a determinative. The following two signs would present too many determinatives. Instead, one of them (likely the sundisk) writes m < mȝwy, “radiance”, while the two uraei write w (< wȝḏ.ty) in nbw. Khnum on top of the basket would be the determinative for the entire epithet.↩︎
A similar writing of ỉtn with Tatenen and Neith occurs in Esna 387, 1. Here the winged sundisk would write ỉ < ʿ < ʿpy. The next term is uncertain: ỉtn nfr is a common epithet (LGG I, 617b), note especially Esna VI, 541, south (also spelled: ʿtn). However, the trap almost always writes sḫt, but perhaps here a variant name for a net, nn.t/nm.t, is intended. Thus resulting in n < nn.t, f < fȝỉ (see the next stanza), r < ršw.↩︎
LGG II, 159c, read this alternatively as ʿnḫ.tw m stw.t=f, presumably understanding the first lion as tw < “Tutu.” However, the term mȝwy, “radiance”, is elsewhere written with the lion (e.g. Esna VI, 541, north), and the same epithet with mȝwy occurs in Esna II, 48, A; Esna 268, B; see also LGG II, 145b-c.↩︎
These epithets reflect the Egyptian solar cycle, and the riddle of the Sphinx; cf. Esna 219, 5 (different phrasing). The exact reading of each sign is uncertain. The first verse is simple: Khepri = ḫ < ẖr, p, r < Rʿ, Morning = d < dp, wȝ < wỉȝ. In the second verse, the signs appear to be in the wrong order, and I emend to: solar disk = ỉ < Ỉmn, t < ỉty, n < nṯr (crocodile); the mummy writes m, and the sundisk with uraeus writes hrw. Finally, in the last verse Atum (Ỉtm) = ỉ < ỉʿḥ, “moon”, t < tḫn, “obelisk”, m < mȝʿ.t, “Maat.” Finally mšr(w), “evening”, could be m < msỉ, “to give birth”, š (standard value of crocodile), r < rʿ-nb. - Sauneron 1962, p. 127, n. g, had originally interpreted this spelling as an alternate name of Khnum, “Népeh” (followed by PWL, p. 512). Later, Sauneron 1982, pp. 83-84, acknowledged this could be just a variant writing of “Khnum.” Given the context in which this occurs, including the present name of Khnum the Good Protector, only the latter option makes sense. Presumably the back part of the lion (Gard. F22) substitutes for the goat skin sign (F26), and the signs are written in reverse. Thus: ẖn + nb + b < ẖnb < ẖnmw, “Khnum” (cf. Greek: Khnoubis;↩︎
